The New 640bhp Camaro ZL1 is Really Fast

The top of the line model of the current generation Chevrolet Camaro is the SS. Its 6.2 litre V8 can already produce 455bhp. This was apparently not enough for Chevrolet and they have made a hardcore model that has been nicknamed “The Hammer”. So how fast does this “hammer” go?

The Chevrolet Camaro ZL1 is a Corvette masquerading as a Camaro. Underneath the hood hides a supercharged 6.2 litre V8 from the Corvette Z06 with a power output of 640bhp and 640 lb-ft of torque. The engine is paired with either a 10-speed automatic or a 6-speed manual gearbox.

There are a few other noticeable upgrades to the ZL1 from the SS. The front grille is lower which aids in cooling the engine. New front splitters and carbon fibre inserts channel hot air out of the engine bay. The ZL1 features the Magnetic Ride suspension and wider front fenders to improve the handling. The factory tires are made for “non-prepared” surfaces which just mean regular road materials. The weight of the ZL1 is 200lbs less than the SS which also helps in making it a bit more agile. They also added six-piston brakes up front and four piston ones for the rear courtesy of Brembo. You do need the stopping power with this beast.

With the supercharged engine, the ZL1 can accelerate to 62mph from a dead stop in 3.5 seconds which is really quick. The top speed of this beast is 193mph and it can do the quarter mile drag in 11.4 seconds at 127mph. The lap time around the Nurburgring 7 minutes and 23.77 seconds which is faster than the Mercedes-Benz McLaren SLR and the Ford Shelby Mustang GT350R. Is that fast enough for you?

The ZL1 will come in the coupe and convertible versions. The starting price for the coupe is $62,135 and the convertible at $69,135. The ZL1 will be on sale later this year.
