Tesla’s Easter Egg Boosts Acceleration of Model S

Tesla has made the news a few months ago for achieving a very spectacular feat. Engineers from the company have managed to increase the acceleration of its electric vehicle to rival those of Italian hypercars. They are at it again with another performance boost for their top tier electric cars.

The last time out, Tesla gave the Model S P90D a new battery to give it the performance boost. The new 100kWh battery turned the Model S P90D into the P100D. By giving the car some extra juice, the car could accelerate much faster in the ludicrous mode to the tune of 2.5 seconds from zero to 62mph. It rivals the acceleration time of the Koenigsegg One:1. The range was also extended to 315mph given that you don’t engage ludicrous mode.

Tesla has not given a new battery this time but a software update.

Elon Musk calls this update an “Easter Egg” and it again translates to an increase in acceleration. The Easter Egg software update shaves another tenth of a second to the zero to 62mph sprint bring the time down to 2.4 seconds. There has also been a bump for the quarter mile time with the P100D clocking in at 10.6 seconds. In comparison, the Koenigsegg One:1 clocks in at 9.8 seconds for the quarter mile sprint. This means the P100D would probably hang with the One:1 for around 5 seconds before getting smoked. Theoretically, if you got rid of everything in the interior of the P100D, it could quite possibly be a very competitive drag machine.

There is no word on when the “Easter Egg” will drop or how much it will cost. The Model X will also receive the updated software and have a similar performance boost. If you want the Model S P100D, be prepared to shell out £114,200. If you have an existing Model S P90D with Ludicrous Mode, you can avail of the new battery pack for £7,500.

Ever wonder what would happen if they took the P100D drivetrain and bolted it in the Model 3? That should give the Hennessy Venom a run for its money.
