Formula One has gotten a bit more exciting this season. The constructor’s championship was settled long ago with Mercedes again coming out on top. But the driver’s championship was a different story went down the wire. After two years of Lewis Hamilton winning it all, we now have a new champion.

Ladies and gentlemen, presenting Nico Rosberg. The 2016 Formula One Driver’s World Champion.

Nico Rosberg, if you don’t know follow Formula One, is a German racer of Finnish descent. He is the son of Keke Rosberg, who also happens to be a Formula One World Champion himself. This is the second time that both father and son are world champions. The first to accomplish such a feat were Graham and Damon Hill. Keke Rosberg won the title for Williams F1 in 1982 and was also the first team of his son.

The 2016 Formula One season was exciting as it was very much neck and neck competition between Mercedes AMG Petronas teammates Lewis Hamilton and Nico Rosberg. The previous years were just dominated by Hamilton that he was already crowned world champion with a few races still in the calendar. The margin of victory was always more than 60 points.

This year, the gap for both drivers was just 5 points. Entering the final race in Abu Dhabi, the race was so tight that if the drivers finished in a certain order, Hamilton could have been champion. The final race saw Hamilton finishing in first place in the race but with Rosberg winning the championship by finishing second. To give you an idea of how close it was, if Rosberg finished outside the top three and Hamilton won, then Hamilton would have gotten the championship. It was pretty interesting stuff for race fans.

In the constructor’s championship, Mercedes AMG Petronas again dominated the rest of the field. The gap between Mercedes and the closest rival Red Bull Racing was 297 points. Drivers score points in Formula One by the position they finish in. First place is 25 points, second is 18 and third is 15 points. Scoring positions are from first to tenth place.
