If you are a fan of the Ariel Atom, you might be interested in its cousin from down under.
The GP700 is the first automobile made by Quantum Performance Vehicles of Australia. The GP700 is based on the Ariel Atom with the styling of an open wheeled Formula 3 car. It has two racing seats, a roll bar and not much else in the interior department. If you are looking for no-nonsense performance? This is definitely the vehicle for you–if you can get over the fact that you’re driving a racecar and might not be ideal for a date out, although it is road legal.
The power behind this “hypercar” comes from a rather small 2.7 liter four cylinder Honda K-Series block with a pair of superchargers producing a massive 700bhp and 482 lb-ft of torque. The GP700 can accelerate from naught to 60mph in a blistering time of just 2.6 seconds which is just 0.1 seconds slower than the Ariel Atom 3.5R. It also has a six-speed sequential transmission and paddle shifters. This is definitely good for a racer.
This skinny performance car tips the scales at a measly 700kg providing power to weight ratio of 1:1. The only other car to boast such a power to weight ratio is the Koenigsegg Agera One:1 which costs around three times that of a GP700. This lightweight racer also sports front and rear spoilers to provide the much-needed downforce to keep it on the road. Its manufacturers claim that the GP700 has enough downforce at speeds of 280km/h to drive upside down; although we do not recommend that you try it out yourself.
The cost to purchase this small hypercar is around $700,000 USD or around $900,000 – $1,000,000 AUD. The price is inclusive of GP700 track day support and each GP700 will be engineered to the driving style and skill level of its owner. Quantum can even fine tune the performance to reflect the learning curve of the owner to the car. But unlike other track cars like the Ferrari XX or the McLaren P1 GTR, the GP700 is road legal and can be driven home after a day at the raceway. The GP700 was also designed to be compliant to Australian Design Rules and Victorian Regulations.
The GP700 production will be limited to five to ten cars per year. And there will also be a hardtop version in the near future.
