The Italian supercar company Lamborghini will be producing a new sports utility vehicle (SUV) called the Urus. This concept car looks like something we would love to drive. It looks sporty, yet laid back, when compared to other Lamborghini styles we keep seeing. The Urus is slated to debut in the Frankfurt Motor Show in 2017 and will be produced in the company’s Sant’Agata facility.
The company has also announced that the new SUV will be powered by a 4.0 liter twin turbo V8 engine. This will be the first forced induction engine developed by Lamborghini. Maurizio Reggiani, head of R&D for Lamborghini has stated that the decision to have a turbo charged engine was made because of the specific torque requirements of an off-road vehicle. The choice of engine makes practical sense since true off-road SUVs need plenty of low-end torque while the top-end turbo chargers will still make the car perform like a proper Lamborghini should. We may have to wait a while before the company announces the performance specs of the new engine. We are definitely excited to hear about this.
CEO Stephan Winkelmann has stated that the choice of engine has caused quite a stir in which the Lamborghini owners and fans but he insists that the new forced induction engine will still invoke the same emotions as the naturally aspirated Lamborghinis do. And the company has also gone on to say that the Urus will be a proper SUV with the ability to tackle sand dunes as well as open roads. The Urus will have styling that is readily recognizable as a Lamborghini and that the final production model has evolved considerably from the concept car that debuted way back in 2012. As open road lovers, this definitely excites us.
In preparation for the production of the Urus, Lamborghini has started the expansion of the Sant’Agata Bolognese facility, effectively doubling the current factory to about 150,000sqm. The new SUV will open up 500 new jobs in the factory production line.
We do hope that the Urus will be more successful than Lamborghini’s first foray into the SUV back in 1993. The Urus SUV will be available in 2018 with 3,000 units to be made. There are also plans for special edition Urus in the near future.
