Jaguar goes after Tesla with the I-Pace SUV

The electric vehicle segment has been dominated by Tesla so far this year. They have had some impressive numbers both in performance and sales figures. Now, Jaguar wants a piece of the pie and they are coming after a niche that Tesla isn’t strong in.

Jaguar is introducing the I-Pace, which is a crossover SUV with an all-electric motor.

The twin electric power plants in the I-Pace can produce 394bhp and a massive 516 lb-ft of torque. If you’re thinking it’s slower that the Model X 90D then you’re right. It has 300bhp less than the 90D but the beefy torque rating will remind you that this is an SUV, not a sports car. The I-Pace can accelerate to 62mph from a standstill in under 4.0 seconds which dominates all SUVs including the Bentley Bentayga W12 and Porsche Cayenne Turbo S.

As with every electric car, the batteries are as important as the engines. The I-Pace does have the range to keep up with Tesla. The I-Pace will have a range of 310 miles on a single charge of its 90kWh battery. The batteries can be charged to 80% in just 90 minutes with the 50kWh rapid charger. Jaguar has also future-proofed the I-Pace to allow a 150kWh charger.

Any self-respecting electric vehicle would have all the tech that it can cram into the car. There is a 12-inch instrument panel and another 12-inch touchscreen as its central display. There is another “minor” screen with rotary dials on either side. It should be easier to press buttons than a touchscreen when going at 80mph. The interior is also wrapped in leather and Moonstone Alcantara.

The I-Pace has been designed to be roomy. It has 530 liters of boot space for your luggage. It also comfortably sits 5 people. While similar in size to the Porsche Macan, the legroom is more like a Cayenne.

The Jaguar I-Pace is at the concept stage as of the moment though it will begin production in 2018. The estimated price for the entry level will be around £60,000 which isn’t going to break the bank. We hope that the production version of the I-Pace will be as pretty as the concept car.

Stay tuned for more news on the I-Pace.
