The Mercedes AMG GT was introduced in 2014 and was well received by fans and critics. Now, to keep up with Porsche and Ferrari, the GT needs an upgrade. And this is one serious update to an already awesome car.
Introducing the baddest AMG on the block, the Mercedes AMG GT-R.
The Mercedes AMG GT-R has gotten a significant power boost thanks to the 4.0-litre twin turbo V8 that produces 577bhp and 516 lb-ft of torque. That’s 74bhp and 36 lb-ft more than what the AMG GT S has. The GT-R tops out at 198mph and can accelerate to 62mph from a standstill in 3.6 seconds. That is .2 seconds and 5mph better than the GT-S which puts it in SLS Black Series territory. The GT-R has the AMG seven-speed dual clutch transmission and transfers all that power to the rear wheels. One interesting bit about the engine is that it is placed in the “hot inside V” configuration which reduced turbo lag.

The exterior has been upgraded to look more like the AMG GT3 race car. The AMG body kit features a new front intake, grille and diffuser. The rear has a new diffuser and manually adjustable fixed rear wing. There are active flaps behind the front fascia which helps with the air intake. The titanium exhaust system also has flaps that can be adjusted to control the noise levels. Aside from the main exhaust pipe, there are two hidden exhaust pipes tucked away in the rear diffuser.
Other bits included in the GT-R are adjustable forged aluminium suspension with active dampers, four-wheel steering system and an electronic differential. The standard brakes are made of composite materials but there is an option for ceramic brakes. Most of the body is made of lightweight metals and carbon fibre with the overall weight at 1,630kgs.
The Mercedes AMG GT-R will be available in March 2017. There is no pricing yet but it is estimated to be north of the £110,000 price tag of the AMG GT S. One good news is that production of this amazing car will not be limited. There will also be other versions like a convertible, a GT4 racer and there are even rumours of a Black Series version. Stay tuned for more news and information on the AMG GT-R.
