Ford Introduces Race Ready Mustang GT4

The GT4 Championships has transformed many streetcars into some of the most awesome track day racers. When you talk about GT4, you would think of the Porsche Cayman GT4 Clubsport or the McLaren 570S GT4 among the top of the heap. Ford now wants to enter the fray with its own track-ready racer and it’s a Mustang.

The Ford Mustang GT4 was unveiled at the SEMA show and has gotten gearheads excited.

The Mustang GT4 is based on the beastly Shelby GT350R-C which has a very good racing pedigree. The Mustang GT4 is powered by a 5.2-litre V8 petrol engine capable of producing 526bhp and 429 lb-ft of torque. It is paired with a six-speed paddle shift gearbox. If the performance of the Shelby is any indication, the Mustang should be able to reach 62mph from the starting grid in just 3.7 seconds and have a top speed beyond 170mph.

There are a lot of changes to the Mustang GT4 to make it an FIA compliant race car. There is the mandatory roll cage for driver protection and racing slick tires. The suspension modifications courtesy of Multimatic include modified dampers, control arms and rear stabilisers. There is an aerodynamic package that includes the front splitters, rear diffusers and fixed rear wing for the much-needed downforce. The Mustang sits on 18.1 inch Forgeline alloy wheels.

There are also some fancy technology bits going into the car. There are an engine controller and ABS system which you can fine tune to fit your own specifications. There is a Motec dash to keep track of your racing progress. Don’t be surprised though if it’s the only things you see inside the car since it has been stripped down to save weight.

The Ford Mustang GT4 will be available to interested teams and individuals by 2017.

Imagine the Mustang lining up against the McLaren and Porsche. It will be an exciting season.
