The Porsche 718 Boxster was introduced over two months ago and it doesn’t come as a surprise that the Cayman was also going to get the 718 badge and treatment. The 718 badge is in homage of the Porsche 718 Spyder from the 1960s which is one of the most iconic cars from the German automaker.

The 718 Spyder was a four-cylinder sports car back in the day. So, living up to the namesake, the 718 Cayman S has a four-cylinder turbocharged boxer engine. The top-of-the-line S model has a 2.5 litre that can put out 350bhp and 309 lb-ft of torque. The smaller engine is more powerful than the naturally aspirated one that it replaces with 250bhp and 37 lb-ft of torque. It is much quicker too, going from nought to 62mph in 4.0seconds with a top speed of 177miles per hour. The transmission options are six-speed manual or seven-speed PDK (paddle shift).

The changes to the Cayman are not just under the bonnet.
There are performance upgrades that live up to the 718 badge. The suspension has been made stiffer and the anti-roll bars are thicker to help with the handling. The rear tires have been widened and the brakes are bigger to tame those extra horses. The steering rack has been upgraded for better control of the more powerful car.

The Cayman also features some high-tech options: torque vectoring, active dampers and lower ride height are added features that buyers can opt to include. There is also a Sports Chrono pack that give it the 918 steering wheel and additional drive modes.

The Porsche 718 Cayman S is priced lower than the 718 Boxster, coming in at £48,834 without the additional bits. There is also the base model 718 Cayman, which has a smaller 2.0-liter turbocharged engine. The price for the base model is £39,878. Both options are cheaper by £1,800 than their 718 Boxster counterparts.

So, are you going with the Cayman or the Cayman S? Or would you rather go with the Boxster instead?
