Introducing the Tesla Model 3: An Electric Car on a Budget

There has been a shift in recent years in terms of environmental consciousness with all the issues of global warming and air pollution. At the forefront of this environmental movement is the new wave of electric cars. They run like petrol cars but without the carbon emissions, plus they are economical in terms of power consumption.

The only gripe about electric cars is that they are bloody expensive. Even with tax incentives in place, an electric car will set you back a huge sum. Some basic model sedans are as expensive as petrol-powered sports cars. This is probably the only reason why a majority of us still drive petrol cars.

Then there is the Tesla Model 3.

Tesla Model 3

The Tesla Model 3 is the electric car for the budget-conscious driver. The smallest electric car in the Tesla lineup is meant to be affordable but does not compromise on its main purpose which is to shuttle people around. There are only a few specs available at the moment but what we do know is that the Model 3 can accelerate from naught to 62mph in 6 seconds and have a range of 215 miles on a single charge. The base model will be rear wheel drive but with an option for a dual motor all wheel drive system.

On the exterior, the Model 3 looks like a smaller Model S that can seat 5 people comfortably. It has a large glass roof to make it look more spacious from the inside. Tesla also guarantees five-star safety ratings even with the glass roof. Speaking of the interior, the instrument panel has been streamlined to add more room for the front passengers. The instruments, gauges and controls have been moved to a 15-inch touch screen.

What else is there to the Tesla Model 3?

Other features of the Tesla Model 3 include the semi-autonomous drive system that comes standard. Cruise control, lane-keeping, automatic high / low beam headlights and self parking features are optional.

The base model of the Tesla Model 3 is $35,000 US Dollars before tax incentives but could go as high as $42,000 with all the optional bits. There are currently 276,000 units already pre-ordered just a few days after launch. If you are looking to purchase on, the Model 3 will be available in 2017.
